Death | ABT Aug 1749 | On Ship to America? |
Johannes Bruckhoffer left Gimbsheim of the Palatinate 13 May 1749 with a small local group of parishioners who were very interrelated. John either died on ship as his wife and children did or was too sick to sign a ship's manifest and died very soon after. As of yet I have not found him listed. Most of the others are accounted for having arrived in the port of Philadelphia around September. His adult nephew (son of his sister), Michael Beltzer was in the emigrant group. I have not located him on a ship's list, either. In the "Brethren From Gimbshim" booklet by Annette K. Burgert, it is stated that there is a notation in the Gimbsheim church book that he "died in America." No date given. In the Ephrata Register it states "Died 1751 - Bolsner (Bolner), Michael, from Gimbsheim Revival." Since the only person named in that group who had a name close to that was Michael Beltzer (most of the names seem somewhat altered) I have concluded that must be the same person. If Michael took his young cousins, Jacob and Conrad under his charge upon arrival in America and if Michael did die in 1751, perhaps that would explain the boys' appearance in Orphan's Court in December 1751. In the Index to the Will Books and Intestate Records of Lancaster County is listed Blatner, Michael, 1751, perhaps another variation of the name. My question is why didn't the closeknit communal Ephrata group provide for the young Bruckhoffer boys. Why didn't another family in the Gimbsheim group take them in as there were relatives there? So far, there are no definite answers. If any of the old records are still available, is there an interested person in Lancaster County who could research the possibilities in that area? Are their "apprentice" records? Guardians were to make regular reports on their charges. Is it too much to hope that some court records might still exist? Bobbie Jean |
