from The Biographical & Historical Memoirs Of Muskingum County OH pages 398-399 The Muskingum Valley is one of the most fertile agricultural regions of the state of Ohio, and in Salt Creek Township, near this locality, Milton Clay Brookover Is the owner of 136 acres, which he tills in a careful manner, and is also engaged in the buying and selling of stock. He is of German decent and traces his ancestry back to JACOB BROOKOVER, who was born in Germany on the 29th of February 1738, near the Rhine River. At quite an early age he left Germany, with the rest of his fathers family to come to this country, and after a long journey of seventeen weeks (all of his family but himself having died on the voyage), he landed on the American shores. The ship on which he sailed was manned by a desperate crew, who attempted to starve the passengers to death, and were only prevented from doing so by the threats of the passengers to throw the captain of the vessel overboard unless he reached land in time. Jacob Brookover learned the tailor trade in Maryland; afterward married, and raised a family of eight children. Three of his sons served in the Revolutionary War, one being in the regular army. After the close of the war he moved to Virginia and afterward, to Ohio where he died at the age of eighty-nine years. Richard Brookover his son, and father of Milton Clay Brookover was born in Fredericksburg, MD, Oct 26, 1771, was a farmer and carpenter by occupation................. |
Jacob Brookover, German Immigrant 1749 Posted by: Bobbie Jean (ID *****6113) Date: February 13, 2003 at 00:43:40 of 272 Johannes Bruckhoffer, b. 1717, son of Michael and Apollonia (Muth) Bruckhoffer, m. Anna Catharina, dau of Philipp Oswals, 6 May 1738, in Gimbsheim, a samall village on the Rhine River in the Gimbsheim Reformed Church, Palatinate, Germany. Their firstborn son, Johann Jacob, was born 16 Feb 1739. According to the Gimbsheim Church Records dated 13 May 1749, containing a list of parishioners left for America with the purpose of joining the church at Ephrata founded by Conrad Beissel in Lancaster Co., PA. The group included two sons and daughter of Beissel's deceased brother, the Bruckhoffer family, including their four living children: Jacob, Conrad, b. 1742, Johannes b. 1746, and Philipp b. 1747 (LDS Microfilm # 1441990). In Sep 1749 all had arrived at Philadelphia, with most being on transcribed ships lists with the exceptions of the Bruckhoffer family, his nephew, Michael Beltzer, and a family named Christ, not yet having been found on a list. It was common for captains to list only men over 16 who were well enough to take the oath. The Index to "Wills and Deeds of Lancaster Co., 1729 - 1850, lists John Bruckhoffer, died intestate, 1749. Orphans Court, Lancaster Co. Dec. 1751 appointed guardians for Jacob and Conrad "Brookhove" orphaned sons of John Brookhove. Emanuel Carpenter, Jacob's guardian, was a judge. It may be that Jacob was apprenticed to a tailor as that became his trade. As yet, it is not certain what became of Conrad after John Simon was appointed his guardian. Jacob married young (as his son John was born, it is thought, by 1760) and moved to Maryland living on the Charles Carrol Estates in Frederick County. It may be that most if not all his children were born there before locating in Frederick Co., Virginia. I have not seen that positively stated. John said he was born in Maryland, Mary Ann (abt 1768)told her children she was also. Others include Thomas, who remained in Maryland, Susanna, Nancy Ann, 1767, Catherine, 1770, Richard, 1771, Aseal, 1775, Priscilla, 1777. There may have been others.
