Struck by Lightning
The freaks of lightning are by no means uniform in character, while the fatal accidents and narrow escapes are wonderful to relate. All this was demonstrated on Sunday afternoon by what occurred in our city at the residence of old Mr. Eicher, on Cherry street, the first house south of the railway, east side. The building was struck but received no damage, the fluid passing down the spouting and entering mother earth. Not so with the group of young men standing in the front yard, three of whom were hit and prostrated, one, Mr. Tendler, supposed for a few minutes to be dead but soon revived. The other two struck were two sons of Mr. Eicher, one Jacob Eicher, Jr., who lives a mile out of town, and is engaged in the milk business. He was rendered insensible for a minute or two, and on reviving begged to have his boots taken off as his feet felt as if they would burst. When his feet were exposed they were found to be black and blue and swollen.
Mr. Tendler was thought to be dead and was carried into the house. Water was applied and he soon gave evidence of reviving, and in due time was fully restored, feeling curious, however, for a day or two. Mr. Tendler’s case was the most remarkable. The fluid tore his vest somewhat in front, his pants about the knees, and burst his shoes completely, cutting the knife, and ripping and tearing the leather about the bottoms, utterly ruining both gaiters. His feet also were discolored and felt swollen and painful. It is evident all made a narrow escape.---Canton Democrat.
