After a Long Absence A Man is arrested on a charge of Embezzlement—returns to his home in this city
James Herbut was arrested by Constable Krumlauf at the home of his family in High Street on the charge of embezzlement. The affidavit was filed by Gotlieb Eicher, and the embezzlement of $400 said to have been from Eicher’s father-in-law, Leonard Betz, now deceased. The embezzlement is alleged to have occurred on April 20, 1868. He returned to Canton after being absent that length of time but a few weeks ago. He applied for a pension, which may possibly have been the means of his apprehension. Before Squire Bowers Wednesday morning, he waived examination and was bound over to court. His family have resided here for years.

Subject: Gottlieb Eicher

Hello, I noticed yesterday that you had saved my great, great grandfather's obituary to your tree. In looking at your tree I notice that you have confused two different Gottlieb Eichers. I ran into the same problem when I began my research. It can be hard to differentiate the two. My Gottlieb Eicher is not the Gottlieb who married Adelin Lennerr. I hope this will save you some research time. Below is the info on my GGreat Grandfther:
Gottlieb Eicher, son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Feller) Eicher, was born July 1851 in Switzerland and arrived in America in 1854. He died on January 12, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio.

Gottlieb married (1) Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Betz, daughter of Leonard and Elizabeth (Steffy) Betz on April 2, 1872. Mary Elizabeth was born on July 1, 1854 in Schaefferstown, Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She died on January 5, 1901.

Gottlieb and Lizzie had the following children:

Bertha Estelle Eicher was born on February 14, 1875 in Ohio. She died on April 29, 1946 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. Bertha married William Phillip Schrock, son of John Frederick and Eliza (Shroyer) Schrock on June 30, 1897 in Massillon, Ohio.

Leonard Frederick Eicher was born December 27, 1885 in Ohio. He died on July 12, 1914 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio. Leonard married Clara May Powell in November 1912.

Gottlieb married (2) Nellie Maude Gray. Nellie was born about 1873 in Ohio, the daughter of Stanley and Almeda R (Crabill) Gray. She died in Columbus, Ohio on December 18, 1940.

Gottlieb and Nellie had the following children:

Robert S Eicher was born February 18, 1903 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio along with his twin brother Theodore and died on December 8, 1964 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.

Theodore Gray Eicher was born February 18, 1903 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio along with his twin brother Robert and died on December 26, 1941 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

1880 census lists Gottlieb as an agent for Safe Works and Elizabeth keeping house. On same census page is John and Sarah Heckman (Mary Elizabeth’s sister and brother-in-law), Elizabeth Betz with grandson John Myers (Mary Elizabeth’s mother and her nephew); John and Sarah Betz (Mary Elizabeth’s brother and sister-in-law); and Gottlieb and Elizabeth Icher (sic – Eicher) so they were close neighbors in the 4th ward of Canton, Stark, Ohio. I wonder why Bertha who was born in 1875 was not listed on the census.

1900 census Canton, Stark, Ohio. The household consists of Gottlieb (agent, safe), his wife Elizabeth, and their son Leonard (at school).

1910 census Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. The household consists of Gottlieb (commercial traveler, safes), his wife Nellie M, and their twin sons Robert S and Theodore J.

1920 census Canton, Stark, Ohio. The household consists of Gottlieb (Grocer, own store)), his wife Nellie M, and their twin sons Robert B (clerk, grocery) and Theodore J (clerk, grocery).
