Biography - Ernest Hiram Cox III left home at 13 after the death of his father, his mother having passed away when he was three years old. He was taken in by a local doctorand ran errands and deliveries for the next four years. One day as he was driving his wagon for a delivery, he met Mattie Belt walking along the road with her little sister who was afflicted with a club foot. They fell in live and were soon married, and Ernest Hiram set about making a living for his newfamily. He was alternately a miner, a blacksmith, an oil well driller for Burkburnett-Duncan oil fields, an inventor and a farmer. Ernest Hiram patented and oil well tester during World War I. The patent was infringed upon (stolen) by the engineer Earl P.Halliburton sent to work for him after Cox had shown Halliburton's man the drawings. Cox tracked the man to Fort Smith, Arkansas. When Cox went to get the sheriff of Fort Smith to serve a subpoena, the engineer, the hotel registrty page and anything else was gone. The engineeer ended up at some point later in Venesuela. E. H. Cox III ran the Cox Oil Well Testing Company in Duncan, Oklahoma and then became a rancher and farmer. Ernest Hiram Cox III died at Waldron, Arkansas and was burried by the Masonic lodge of Duncan, Oklahoma. he was a 32nd degree Mason. |
