Margaret (Davies) Pilkington lost her parents when she was very young. She was apparently raised according to family legend by a tyrannical bachelor uncle in Ireland.
Margaret may have been associated, probably as a domestic, with a DuBois family in Dublin, Ireland. Family legend says they were matenal cousins. The DuBois were French Hugenots who fled France during Catholic persecutions and became millionares and friends of royalty and were connected with the Dunlop Rubber Company. Irish family records were destroyed during Irish civil insurrections for Irish independence.
At 18 years old, Margaret ran off with the groomsman, a tall handsome older man. they were very happy together until he took to drinking heavily. Later she lived with her daughter Esther Barton and granddaughters Elsie and Margaret (called May) andson-in-law John George Barton till her death. |
