Krauthamel / Krouthamel / Grauthamel / Crouthamel

My interest in the Crouthamel family was sparked by the fact that both of my parents were Crouthamel's before marriage.

The pioneer ancestor of the Crouthamel family was Andreas Krauthamel, born around 1730, who emigrated from Germany on the ship "Edinburgh" , arriving in Philadelphia on September 30, 1754 and settled in Bucks County, PA. Henry Krauthamel, son of Andreas, born about 1744, accompanied his father from Germany when a lad. According the records, Andreas and Henry started from Rotterdam, stopped enroute at Crowes, England. It is presumed they came originally from the Palatine and Wirtemberg area.

When he came of age he settled on a tract of land in Bedminster Township, Bucks County, which he purchased from William Allen, Esq. In 1771, Henry married Catherine Eva Geist, born between 1743 and 1755, daughter of Jacob Geist, born 1709 and died APR 1800 and Eva Catherine Strouse, died 1803. Jacob and Eva emigrated here on the ship "Two Brothers" on 30 SEP 1754 Together they had ten children, Andrew, Catherine, John S, Henry, John George, Dorothea Elizabeth, Maria Magdalene, Abraham, John Jacob, and Samuel.

Assessments on the Crouthamel estates were found in the book, "Pennsylvania German Pioneers", by W.J. Hinkle, Volume 42, page 615. This book is at the Bucks County Historical Society in Doylestown, PA. Henry - Established 1781, 150 acres, 3 horses, 4 cattle, 1 dwelling house, 1 outhouse, 11 white occupants, 0 black.

Henry was in the military, his name spelled Croutlamel or Croutmell, Private 1st class, 4th Battalion of Bedminster. He was under Captain McHenry's company in 1781. Reference from DAR Patriot Index 1 page 719. A special note - he received a Special 1799 Surtax because he was over 53 years old and had no sons performing in the military. He paid 18 pounds, 10 shillings.

Henry died 25 AUG 1816 and is buried in the Tohickon Cemetary, Perkasie. The stones of he and Andreas are behind the church. Catherine's is a white stone, in German, hard to read. She died in 1881.

Some of their kids and their families:

George - Born 12 JUN 1779 and died 2 SEP 1855. He married Mary or Catherine Rush or Resh, born 1781, died 8 MAY 1831. They had 5 kids. He was a farmer and lived on a portion of the old homestead in Bedminster, purchasing later the Jacob Yost farm near Keller's Church.

His son Peter was born 1812 and died 1892. He married Catherine Ott and they had 10 children. He learned the trade of shoemaker, but later learned the trade of carpenter, which he followed in Bedminster for 25 years. He also ran his small farm given to him by his father in 1834 where he lived until 1841, when he purchased the 50 acre estate of his father-in-law, Frederick Ott.

Peter's son Noah, born 12 OCT 1841, became a very successful business man in South Perkasie. He was a cigar manufacturer, many Crouthamel relatives from my mom Mary Crouthamel's side of the family, worked at his factory. He learned the carpenter vocation and in 1865 he went to Philadelphia, where he filled the position of a clerk in a cigar store for one year.He married Rebecca Freed in 1865 and they had 8 children. John Jacob - Born 28 JAN 1786 and died 3 APR 1882. Also buried at the family church, Tohickon. Somewhere around 1807, in Bucks County, he married Rebecca Margaret Chessman, born 22 OCT 1787 and died 24 JUL 1860, buried with her husband. They had 10 kids, possible 1 set of twin girls.
