JEREMIAH MERCER , the eldest child of William and Margaret, married Alcinda Latta (1821-1894), a quiet and soft spoken Quaker from the mountains of Pennsylvania, in 1937, Jeremiah was a man of stout build, about six feet tall, with blue eyes, fiery red hair, and a temperament to match. Jeremiah and Alcinda settled on the Tenmile Creek in Tyler County in 1840. They had twelve children: Elizabeth (1838-?) m. David Thomas; Margaret Ann (1840-1922) m. 1) Samuel DeNoon, 2) William Rogers; Ellen (1842-1908) m. Peter Yost; John William (1844-1924) m. Lucinda Gump; Leban (1846- 1909) m. Rebecca Jane VanCamp Buchanan; Rueben Martin (1818-1926) m. 1) Louise VanCamp 2) Roberta Martin; Joseph (1952- 1931) m. Ruth Ann Leek; Jacob (1854- ?) m. 10 Mary Wilson, 2) Jennie Fox; Catherine Belle (1855-1921) m. Richard Henthorne; Rebecca Jane (1857-1934) m. William (Wade) Lehew; Jeremiah Lincoln (1862-1934) m. Elizabeth Mary Henthorne; Elvina (1865-1945) m. Richard Marshall Wilson. Jeremah and Alcinda died in Tyler County and are buried in the Bowser cemetery.

Rebecca Jane, a younger child of Jeremiah and Alcinda, was born on the Tenmile Creek. In 1876, she married William (Wade) Lehew (1853-1928) and the two settled in Tyler County where several of their children were born. William carried the mail on horseback along the Star Route from Middlebourne to New Martinsville. Late in the 1880s, William and Rebecca moved to New Martinsville where William carried the mail from the train station to the post office. They had eleven children, but several died at birth or at an early age of diptheria and scarlet fever. Those that survived infancy were: Alcinda (1877-1905) m. John Pyles; Worley (1886-1928) m. Florence Welch: teeny Catherine (1901-1977) m. Berl Leek; Samuel Earl (1904-1912. After William died of old age in new Martinsville, Rebecca lived with the family of her daughter, Catherine. She died of cancer of the face at Porters FAlls in Wetzel County. Rebecca and William are buried in the Mercer cemetery in Tyler County.

In 1917, while living in the Wetzel County, “Teeny” Catherine Lehew married Berl Leek (1896-1964) son of Elisha and Emma Morgan Leek. They lived in Wetzel County, where Berl worked for the B&O Railroad., until 1926 when they moved to Marshall County, where Berl found work in the Hanna Coal Company until 1929. During the Depression, they moved back to the farm in Porter’s Falls. They lived there until 1935, then moved back into Marshall County. In the early 1930s, Berl went to work for the Powhattan Mining Company and worked until 1943. In 1949, Berl and Catherine moved to a farm near Clarington, Ohio. Berl died of Leukemia in 1964, and Catherine died in 1977, while living with her daughter in Powhatten Point, Ohio. Bothe are buried in the Powhattan cemetery.

Berl and Catherine’s children were: Berl Evert (1918-1919); Forrest (1920-1978); Opal Lorain (1922-?); Edna Lucille (1925- ?); and Peggy Adeline (1929- 1929).

Forrest m. (1939) Alice Pearl Scott) and lived in Ohio. He was employed by the North American Coal Company and died of cancer soon after retirement. They had Forrest Jr. (1940-?); Charlene Laraine (1941-?); Phyllis Jean (1943-?); Alice Geraldine (1947-?)

Opal m. (1942) Charles Wesley Smith, son of John and Dessie Goddard Smith. Charles has worked 40 years for the Ohio Edison Company. They had O’Dessa Catherine (1943-?); Lois Elaine (1945-?); Opal Darlene (1947-?); and Charles Jr. (1954-?) O’Dessa graduated from Ohio University and has taught school for 21 years. She married Clayton Boltz and has Tammy Kay (1966-?); Lois married Samuel Lawhorne and has Bruce Allen (1968- ?) Brian David (1969-?); Brent Edward (1971-?); and Bradley Charles (1972-?). Lois, a LPN, works ta the Woodfield Health Care Center. Darlene married Richard crothers and has Christina Dawn (1971-?) and John Mark (1972-?). Darlene is a graduate of Ohio University and teaches organ and piano. Charles married Barbara VanDyne. He ahs a PhD. in Medieval History from the University of Wales. They lived in Wales for two years.

Edna married Joseph Donald McGrath and lives in MAryland. Both worked for the government in WAshington, D.C. and are retired. They had Patricia Louise (1949-?); and Joseph Lawrence (1960-?); and two grandchildren - Submitted by Opal Smitha nd Charles Smith Jr.
