Researched and Compiled by John W. Hart One Spruce Circle Shiremanstown, PA 17011 e-mail jwhart2@verizon.net SELECTED DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM MERCER 1788 - 1870 FIRST GENERATION 1. William Mercer was born in 1788 in the Front Royal, VA area (per Margaret Mercer's 1879 pension application) and died 3/29/1870 in Tyler Co. WV and is buried in Wolf Pen Cemetery (no grave marker). The first record of William is the 1810 Federal Census, Greene Co., PA where William is listed with wife and no children. William enlisted for military service (War of 1812) in Morgantown (W)VA on 9/1/1812 for 18 months and served in Capt. James Paxton's Company, 12th Regiment of VA Infantry commanded by Col. James Preston (per William Mercer's pension application, 11/7/1850) and was discharged 3/1/1814 in Burlington, VT. William married Betsy Huston prior to the 1810 census and they had two children, Sarah and James (will of Betsy's father John Huston, 3/24/1823 Greene Co., PA). Sarah married Charles O'Dowd and while living in Richmond Co., OH filed an affadavit in support of Margaret's pension application in 1879. No record appears to exist of James but it is possible that he went to Muskingum Co., OH where a James Mercer is listed in the 1830-1880 Federal Censuses. In the 1880 census a James Mercer is listed as born in 1812 in OH and that his father was born in VA and his mother in PA. The only discrepancy is his being born in OH rather PA, everything else is consistent with this James being William's son James. This James Mercer died on 11/4/87 in Zanesville, OH. William Mercer and Betsy Huston were divorced c1814 and Betsy died c1822 (Margaret Mercer's pension application 1879). William married Margaret Metz 7/25/1816 in Greene Co., PA (Margaret Mercer's pension application 1879) and they are listed in the 1820 Federal Census, Monongalia Co.
