Immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1852. He left Germany one day before his sixteenth birthday, to keep from being inducted into the army, because every male was liable for military service in the various state armies. In some parts of Germany registration was required of every male child at birth, and the record was kept up to date as far as addresses were concerned until his call-up-date. Henry came to America as a stowaway and his port of entry was Baltimore, Maryland. He came as a stowaway, because before leaving Germany, one had to declare ones intentions of leaving Germany, so all debts would be paid. It is unlikely he would have been allowed to leave because of his military obligations. His only alternative was to become a stowaway. |
